According to the CDC, Heroin is an illegal and highly addictive opioid drug that if someone overdoses on can cause slow and shallow breathing, coma, and even death. While the drug is most commonly injected, heroine is also snorted or smoked.
Between 2002 and 2013 heroine-related deaths nearly quadrupled and over 8.2k died in 2013.
Laila says that her song Heroine is about “sometimes we choose to do things that are bad for us. And sometimes it feels like the best things in life are all bad. It’s about making wrong choices and being unable to fix them”.
Any addiction feels like you’ve been trapped, like you need to go back to the same bad habit as if your life depends on it. Heroine is no different, and toxic relationships are no different either.
Laila tells me that she grew up in a house full of music so it was a natural part of her life. She first learned how to play the sax in an orchestra from ages 7-17 and started playing guitar and writing songs at age 10. It was like an addiction she could never get out of, because it’s all she knew. “I had jobs here and there, but always quickly ended up back with the writing,” says Laila.
Today, she has a fan base that are devoted to her music since the beginning and the rest are fans that heard them on Desert Island.
We all know that sometimes we choose to do things that are bad for us. And sometimes it feels like the best things in life are all bad. (Heroine) is about making wrong choices and being unable to fix them.Laila Samuels (9/20/2020)
I really enjoy the duo’s music, very different and pop-like. Heroine really sticks out as a song that takes you in and makes you feel everything that happens in the song. All the frustration, and all the sadness. For less than 4 minutes you feel trapped in a vicious cycle of emotions, and then the song ends and you just sit there with a bittersweet aftertaste. That’s true for all of their songs, you feel something with all of them.
The 4 songs in Shandel & Samuel’s collection will be added to our Unedited Feels Spotify playlist.
We are very organic in our sound and will probably stay that way as a duo, but song-wise, you can’t plan stuff.Laila
“We want to make people smile and dance or chill out to our music,” says Laila. This will be the goal for the future releases, and hopefully soon shows will begin again next year so they can see people dancing to their music.
Their next album is set to come out right after New Years, so keep a close eye on all the links below!
I would like to thank Laila for answering my interview questions, and both of them for reaching out to me for this request. Their songwriting is really amazing and I can’t wait to see where they go in their musical journey.
